I lost interest in pro football some 21 years ago. In 1985, I tuned in to NFL games religiously, particularly for the Chicago Bears. I got caught up in the McMahon/Refrigerator Perry/Walter Payton mania and became a Bears fan. The year after was lackluster, particularly after a Green Bay player (Charles Martin) flagrantly picked McMahon up and slammed him to the ground, effectively ruining his shoulder and NFL career. This happened after the play had been stopped. No more Fridge, Payton retired the next year, and Mad Mac was out of the picture.
Now, I find myself excited that the Bears have finally come back around. I await SNL to do a bit on "Da Bears" like they did in the early 90's - albeit without Chris Farley (God rest his soul). It seems I have some hunting to do. I need to poke around in the attic and find the old "Fridge" mug and satin jacket to sport. I only wish Walter Payton was still around to see his team have another go at it.
This will probably be the last Super Bowl I watch for some time, so I plan on making it worthwhile.
